Spinal Anaesthesia for Patients with Coronavirus Disease 2019 and Possible Transmission Rates in Anaesthetists: Retrospective, Single-Center, Observational Cohort Study
Methods: Authors reviewed the charts of mostly healthy ASA 1 female patients undergoing spinal anesthesia for C-section with confirmed COVID infection. They then followed the anaesthetists performing the procedure for development of infection.
Results: Most of these patients had mild infections and tolerated spinal anesthesia without complication. Anesthesia providers demonstrated low rates of infection, especially if they wore higher levels of PPE.
Key Point: Spinal anesthesia for ASA 1 patients with mild COVID-19 infection appears safe, and higher levels of PPE seem to decrease the transmission rate of COVID-19 to providers.
